Music in the Light of Hadith:

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Volume 7, Book of Drinks, Hadith no. 5590

‘There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma`aazif (musical instruments)’.
(This reference is also given by Dr. Zakir Naik, yusuf estes and some other very learned Islamic scholars.)

Explanation:
So if The Prophet (May peace and blessing be upon him) said that they will make these legal   after they have already been made illegal, proves that it is illegal.
Detailed analysis of the Arabic word `ma`aazif ` shows that it refers to musical instruments, the sounds of those musical instruments and singing with the accompaniment of instruments. Closer analysis of the wordings of the Hadith establishes the prohibition of music. Firstly, the words `seek to make lawful ` shows that music is not permissible, as logically one can only seek to make lawful that which is not allowed. Secondly, if music was not prohibited, then it would not have been brought within the same context as fornication and wine-drinking.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Volume 7, Book of Drinks (67), Ch:1, Hadith No.494
Narrated by Abu 'Amir Al-Ash'ari (R.A):

That he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
(71)The book of Al-Adab (Good Manners)
Hadith No.166:
Narrated by ubai bin Ka’b:

The Prophet (May Peace and Blessings be upon him) said, “Some poetry contains wisdom”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Volume 2, Book 15, Number 103:
Narrated by 'Urwa on the authority of 'Aisha
On the days of Mina, (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Abu Bakr came to her while two young girls were beating the tambourine and the Prophet was lying covered with his clothes. Abu Bakr scolded them and the Prophet uncovered his face and said to Abu Bakr, "Leave them, for these days are the days of 'Eid and the days of Mina." Aisha further said, "Once the Prophet was screening me and I was watching the display of black slaves in the Mosque and ('Umar) scolded them. The Prophet said, 'Leave them. O Bani Arfida! (Carry on), you are safe (protected)'."

Explanation:
The reference to these two Hadith are normally given by many Muslims believing that music is Permissible , some argue that Prophet Muhammad (May Peace and Blessings be upon him) stated that “poetry contains wisdom” and He allowed the two girls to play tambourine which clarifies that music is permissible. So let’s dig into the context of these Hadith, “Some poetry contains wisdom” (This Hadith refers to that kind of poetry which brings your heart closer to Allah (s.w.t) not the satanic songs that we listen to today (which are unproductive and a waste of time). The other Hadith in which The Prophet (May Peace and Blessings be upon him) allowed the two girls to play was only because it was a day of celebration for Muslims i.e. (Eid) BUT they were only playing ‘tambourine’ (that too without any bells) as it’s the only musical instrument which is permissible in Islam so there was no music being played (like guitar, piano etc)

(Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith No. 175)
Narrated by Ibn’Umar(R.a):

The Prophet (May Peace and Blessings be upon him) said, “It is better for a man to fill the inside of his body with pus than to fill it with poetry”.

(Sahih Al-Muslim, Book:24, Hadith No. 5279)
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
“The bell is the musical instruments of the Satan”

(Ibn Ma'jah Vol.5 Hadith No.4020)
The Messenger of Allah (May peace and Blessings be upon him) said: "A people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its real name. Merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of female singers. Allah will cleave the earth under them and turn others into apes and swine."
(This hadeeth has also been narrated by al-Bayhaaqi and ibn Asaakir, and has been authenticated by the renowned scholar of Hadith Ibn al-Qayyim.)

(Sunan of Abu Dawood, Hadith No.4909)
Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

I heard the apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “Singing produces hypocrisy in the heart.”

(Tirmizi)

(Tirmizi)
Narrated by Imraan Bin Husain:
Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "In this Ummah will be earthquakes, disfiguration (of faces which will be transformed into apes and pigs) and showers of stone (descending on them from the heaven)." A man from among the Muslimeen said: "O Prophet! When will this be?" Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "When singing girls and musical instruments will become profuse and when liquor will be consumed (in abundance)."

(Kaf-fur Ruaa')
Narrated by Abu Hurairah:

Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him)  said:
"During the last of ages (in close proximity to Qiyaamah) a nation from my Ummah will be disfigured (and transformed) into apes and pigs." The Sahaabah said: "O Prophet! Will they be Muslims? Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. They will be testifying that there is no deity but Allah and that I am His Messenger, and they will be fasting (in the month of Ramadhaan)." The Sahaabah asked: "O Prophet! What will be their condition (to warrant such chastisement)?" Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "They will be indulging in musical instruments, singing girls, musical drums, and they will be consuming liquor. They will one night go to sleep after their liquor and amusement. When they arise in the morning, they will have been disfigured (and transformed into apes and pigs)."

(Nailul Autaar)
Narrated by Ibn Mas'ud:
Prophet (Peace & Blessings be upon him) heard a man singing one night. He then said:
“His Salaat is unacceptable! His Salaat is unacceptable! His Salaat is unacceptable!"

(Nailul Autaar)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah:

Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) said:"Listening to music and singing is sinful. Sitting at such gatherings is fisq (immoral transgression). Deriving pleasure from it is kufr."

(Ibn Asaakir)
Narrated by Anas:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sits and listens to a singing girl, Allah will pour molten lead into his ears on the Day of Qiyaamah."

(Dailmi)
Narrated by Ibn Abbaas:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Judgment, Allah (s.w.t) will proclaim: "Where are those who had protected their ears and their eyes from the musical instruments of satan?" (Allah will instruct the Malaaikah): "Separate them (from the multitudes of people)." They (the Angels) will separate them, and have them seated on dunes of musk and ambergris then Allah (s.w.t) will say to the Malaaikah: "Recite to them My Tasbeeh and My Tamjeed." The Malaaikah will then recite to them with such beautiful voices, the likes of which no one had ever heard."

(Kaf-fur Ruaa')
Narrated by Ibn Umar:

“Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) prohibited singing and listening to singing, and (he also prohibited) gossip."

(Tibraani)
In a lengthy Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abu Umaamah:

it is mentioned that on the occasion of the expulsion of shaitaan from the heaven and his exile to earth, he (Iblees) supplicated to Allah (s.w.t): "O my Lord! You have exiled me to earth and you have made me accursed………Now, therefore bestow to me a caller (who can call to my path).' Allah (s.w.t) said: "(Your caller) is musical instruments."

(Musnad Ahmad)
Narrated by Hadhrat Aishah (R.A):

"Verily, Prophet Muhammad (Peace & Blessings be upon him) instructed that all bells be cut off from the necks of the camels on the Day of Badr."

(Abu Dawood)
Narrated by Hazrat Umar (R.A):
"I heard Prophet Muhammad (Peace & Blessings be upon him) saying: "Verily, with every bell is a shaitaan (Satan)."
